Therapy for trauma and anxiety, in person in Temecula and telehealth across California

How to Find a Therapist Who Takes Your Insurance in California

Cost is one of the biggest reasons people wait to start therapy. The good news: most health insurance plans cover mental health care, and finding an in-network therapist is easier than it used to be.

Here’s a simple way to figure out what your plan covers and find a therapist who takes it, without spending hours on the phone.

Step 1: Check your mental health benefits

Call the member services or behavioral health number on the back of your insurance card, or log in to your plan’s website. Ask:

  • Is outpatient therapy (psychotherapy) covered, and is telehealth covered?
  • Do I have a deductible I need to meet first?
  • What is my copay or coinsurance for an in-network therapist?
  • Do I need a referral or pre-authorization?
  • Is my behavioral health managed by a separate company? (For example, some plans use Carelon, Evernorth or MHN.)

Write down the date, the person you spoke with, and a reference number for the call.

Step 2: Know the terms

  • In-network: the therapist has a contract with your plan, so you pay your plan’s lower rate
  • Copay: a set amount you pay per session
  • Deductible: the amount you pay before insurance starts covering services
  • Coinsurance: a percentage of the session cost you pay after your deductible
  • Out-of-network: the therapist isn’t contracted with your plan; you may be able to get partial reimbursement with a “superbill”

Step 3: Find an in-network therapist

Your insurance directory is a starting point, but it isn’t always up to date. Many therapists in California now work with platforms like Grow Therapy, Rula and Headway, which check your coverage for you and show your estimated cost before you book. Directories like Psychology Today also let you filter by insurance, specialty and location.

When you reach out to a therapist, share your insurance name and plan type. A good practice will help you confirm coverage before your first session.

What about EAPs?

Many employers offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that covers a set number of free counseling sessions. Check with HR or your benefits portal. It can be a great way to start at no cost.

Plans I work with

Through Grow Therapy, Rula and Headway, I’m in network with many plans, including Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Cigna, Carelon, Health Net, Kaiser Southern California employer plans, Medi-Cal plans, Medicare and several EAPs. Coverage depends on your specific plan, so reach out and I’ll help you check.

I see clients in person at my Temecula office on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and by secure telehealth anywhere in California the rest of the week. Many clients come from Temecula, Murrieta, Menifee, Moreno Valley, Riverside, Perris and Corona. Not sure where to start? Contact me and I’ll walk you through it.
